PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Discovery Education “Live Green” Teacher Grant Contest presented by GM, which begins February 29, 2008 and ends May 15, 2008, provides an opportunity for teachers to receive funding to implement an idea that will increase student learning of new and emerging technologies and their impact on the environment and energy use. Forty (40) awards of $1,000 each will be made available and will be awarded to the teachers (through their schools) whose contest entries propose the most innovative and creative use of the award funds. Twenty (20) of the grants will be awarded to teachers whose schools are located within 50 miles of a General Motors plant; the other twenty (20) grants will be awarded to teachers whose schools are located elsewhere in the United States.
A contest entry will consist of an original essay of no more than 750 words that presents the project objective, a description of the project and a summary of how the project will be implemented. Focus areas and tips for drafting an essay may be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page at www.discoveryeducation.com/livegreen. You may submit more than one entry, but each entry must present a different project and must meet all entry requirements. Entries must be completed in English. It is recommended that teachers obtain approval of their project from their school principal or equivalent administrator prior to entering.
TO ENTER: To submit an entry, go to www.discoveryeducation.com/livegreen and access the “Live Green” Contest page. Complete the online entry form, type or paste your essay into the space provided and follow the steps to complete, save and submit your final entry. Entries must be received at Sponsor’s server by 11:59 PM ET on May 15, 2008.
By submitting an entry, you warrant and represent that your entry is your own original work created by you, has not been previously published, has not won a previous prize or award, that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to your entry materials and that your entry does not violate any law, regulation or any right of any third-party, including but not limited to rights of copyright, publicity and privacy. Submitting an entry that is copyrighted by another individual will make you responsible for any legal action the legal copyright holder might take against you. Entries may not defame or invade the rights of publicity or privacy of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon a person's personal or proprietary rights.
Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entry at any time which, in the Sponsor’s reasonable opinion, endangers the safety or well being of any person or in the event it is determined that the entrant has not complied with these Official Rules. Submissions that are deemed by the judges in their sole discretion to be offensive or inappropriate or not in keeping with Sponsor's image will be void. Sponsor is under no obligation to correspond about entries nor will entries be acknowledged or returned.
-
JUDGING: Judging will be conducted by a panel of judges from Discovery Education and community leaders, based on the following judging criteria:
- Content (50% of total score)
- Originality/creativity of idea (40% of total score)
- Adherence to contest parameters (10% of total score)
The contest entries receiving the highest scores will be declared the winners. In the event of a tie for any prize, the entry with highest Content score will be named the winner.
The winning entrants and their schools will be notified on or about June 9, 2008, and will be required to complete prize acceptance paperwork. If notification documents are returned as non-deliverable, if a winning entrant is found to be ineligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules, does not respond within the time period specified or cannot accept the terms and conditions of being a winner, the next highest scored entrant will be notified and the same process will be followed.

PRIZES: Forty (40) $1,000 grants will be awarded. Twenty (20) of the grants will be awarded to teachers whose schools are located within 50 miles of a General Motors plant; the other twenty (20) grants will be awarded to teachers whose schools are located elsewhere in the United States. Neither the grant recipient nor other party now or hereafter having an interest in the Materials shall have any right or action against the Sponsor, General Motors Corporation, or any other party arising out of any use of said Materials. The winners further agree that the Sponsor or General Motors Corporation may elect, at their sole discretion, to not use the Materials or to use only a portion of the Materials. Each grant recipient agrees that anyone appearing in his/her submission is over the age of 18 or represents that s/he has obtained written consent from such person’s parent or legal guardian. Furthermore, the winner confirms that s/he has informed the people appearing in any photos about Sponsor’s or GM’s use as stated herein and that each of them provided their consent as well.
